Gert De Hertogh graduated as MD in 1999 at the Catholic University Leuven, Belgium. He was trained as a pathologist in the University Hospitals Leuven and in the Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg, Genk, Belgium between 1999 and 2006. In 2007, he obtained his Ph.D., entitled “Studies of the bacterial flora in Crohn’s disease tissues: a molecular bacteriological approach”. Part of this work was done in the laboratories of Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Beerse, Belgium.

Since 2009 he is full staff member of the Department of Pathology, University Hospitals Leuven and teaches gastrointestinal pathology to medical students. Gert De Hertogh’s research is focused on gastrointestinal and autopsy pathology and has contributed so far to 245 peer-reviewed full papers on a variety of topics including chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, colorectal carcinoma and Barrett’s oesophagus. He is also currently involved as a pathology expert in IBD trials of Centocor J&J.
