Karen van Hoeve attained her medical degree summa cum laude in 2009 and completed her training in paediatrics at the University Clinic Leuven in 2014. Over the next three years, she pursued training in two paediatric subspecialisations, first in paediatric nephrology and subsequently in paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition under the mentorship of Prof Dr. Ilse Hoffman at the University Clinic Leuven. She then obtained her Belgian board certification in paediatric gastroenterology in 2017. In May 2020, she successfully defended her PhD thesis at the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of Leuven under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Séverine Vermeire. Her scientific work has focused on the role of therapeutic drug monitoring and mucosal healing in improving long-term outcome in paediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

She joined the paediatrics staff at the University Clinic Leuven in 2019, with a multifaceted clinical expertise. Her research interest primarily centred on optimising outcomes for paediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease. She is member of the Scientific Committees of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO), the Belgian IBD Research and Development (BIRD) group and the Belgian Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and nutrition (BeSPGHAN).
